walt disney world magic kingdom,
Why is the “Pirates of the Caribbean” ride half as long at the Magic Kingdom (Disney World) as Disneyland’s?

I’ve never understood this…if anything the Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World has a LOT more space than Disneyland, but “Pirates” is only about 8 minutes long there, compared with 16 minutes at Disneyland. Anyone know why this happened?

Because Pirates was a last-minute oh-my-god-they’re-complaining addition to Disney World. It had originally been intended just for Disneyland but east coasters complained that it wasn’t in their park, so a second attraction was hastily assembled. Also, there’s no Blue Bayou restaurant and lagoon, so the attraction is shorter. Disney had previously made two of everything when installing The Haunted Mansion in Disneyland in 1969, which is why The Haunted Mansion was one of the completed attractions on Disney World Magic Kingdom’s opening day in 1971.

You also have to know that everything at Disney World Magic Kingdom is built above-ground. There’s a system of tunnels underneath the park, so I would imagine suspending the weight of that much water over tunnels not expressly designed for it would be difficult to do after the tunnels had already been built. I’ve read that the Submarine Voyage leaked constantly until it was closed, so I’d imagine similar problems building a huge Pirates ride.
